What is a Y-Strap Adjustment?

The Y Strap is a nifty tool used by some chiropractors. While supporting the patient while they are laying on their back, the Y-Strap cradles the neck and supports the head. The chiropractor can then apply traction by pulling the Y-Strap to provide space and decompress the joints. For an additional release, the chiropractor can then do a pulling motion to initiate an adjustment. Both techniques elongate the spine and open up joint spaces. This method has been used for decades and was introduced in the 1970s and was known as The Pettibon System.

Is it Safe?

Y Strap adjustments are indeed safe. Your chiropractor should be doing an examination and health history before any treatment. If you are experiencing sprains, strains, and ligament laxity you should avoid using the Y-Strap for an adjustment. Persons with certain medical conditions like the following should also not receive the Y-Strap adjustment; dizziness, bone cancers, degenerative diseases, and many others need extra screening.
